New Sports at the 2022 Commonwealth Games: Five Events to Watch in Birmingham

Five new and returning sports will be presented at this year’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Cricket will return after a 24-year absence, with 3×3 basketball in the foreground and para-athletes taking part in table tennis for the first time.

Sports news take a look at the latest events to be included in the Games.

Cricket T20 (women)

Cricket returns to the Commonwealth Games for 2022 in the form of the Women’s Twenty20.

The 1998 Games in Kuala Lumpur was the last time cricket was featured, with a List A men’s tournament.

Now it’s up to women, with eight nations – Australia, Barbados, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka – taking part in the inaugural Birmingham event.

The teams are split into two groups before the four best teams enter the semifinals.

Australia is the favorite to claim gold, with England and India seen as their most likely challengers.

After being excluded from the 2018 edition on the Gold Coast, judo will again be the protagonist of the Commonwealth Games.

It is the fourth time he has run as a sport at the Games since appearing in 1990, 2002 and 2014.

Of Japanese origin, judo is a unique combat sport that prohibits punches, kicks and strikes.

However, the gentle nature of the sport doesn’t stop it from being hectic and physically demanding.

The skills required in the sport have seen a number of former judo athletes transition to the UFC.

3×3 basketball

The fast-paced game of 3×3 basketball will make its Commonwealth Games debut this year.

Played in the middle of the pitch, teams of three players (with an extra substitute) run to 21 points or play until the clock reaches 10 minutes.

The shot clock is also faster than a normal basketball game, with teams only having 12 seconds to score.

Baskets made from inside the scoring arc are worth one point, while shots taken outside the arc are worth two.

12 nations will take part in this sport in women’s, men’s and wheelchair events.

Wheelchair basketball 3×3

For the first time in Birmingham there will also be a 3×3 basketball wheelchair format.

Most of the same rules apply to non-wheelchair and wheelchair games.

However, there is no double dribble rule in the wheelchair format.

Table tennis para

While table tennis has been a fixture in previous editions, table tennis will be included for the first time in the history of the Commonwealth Games.

The rules are generally similar to ping pong for able-bodied, with games played to best of five games.

Para events will take place alongside men’s and women’s singles and doubles, mixed doubles, men’s and women’s team events.

Unique sports for the 2022 Commonwealth Games

This year’s Commonwealth Games will feature some sports that are not included in the Olympic Games.

For 2022, these events are T20 cricket (women), petanque, netball and squash.
