Summary: Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly evolving in the healthcare sector, and various AI applications have been developed to solve some of the most pressing problems healthcare organizations currently face. It is imperative that health care leaders understand the state of AI technologies and the ways in which these technologies can be used to improve efficiency, safety and access to health services, achieving value-based care. This article provides a guide to understanding the fundamentals of artificial intelligence technologies (e.g., machine learning, natural language processing, and AI voice assistants), as well as their proper use in healthcare. It also provides practical recommendations to help decision makers develop an AI strategy that can support their digital healthcare transformation.

2. Overcoming Healthcare Constraints with Cloud Technology (PubMed)

Summary: The transition of business operations to the cloud brings a number of opportunities and challenges. This step requires a deep and complex understanding of all elements of the technology, as well as defining how the specific challenges of the cloud can be addressed. To provide a better understanding of these health care opportunities and challenges, a systematic literature overview and industry case review are used. The results of the two methods show the interconnectedness of the benefits and constraints of cloud deployment. However, the health case studies provide interesting insights that emphasize the complexity and overlap of the cloud that appears to balance organizational limitations.

3. Using digital health technology to better generate evidence and provide evidence-based care (PubMed)

Summary: As we enter the information age of healthcare, digital healthcare technologies offer significant opportunities to optimize both clinical care delivery and clinical research. Despite their potential, the use of such information technologies in clinical care and research faces major data quality, privacy and regulatory issues. Hoping to address both the promises and challenges digital health technologies face in the transformation of healthcare, we convened a think tank meeting with academic, industry and regulatory representatives in December 2016 in Washington, DC. In this paper, we summarize the proceedings of the think tank meeting and aim to outline a framework for the appropriate use of digital health technologies in healthcare delivery and research.

4. Technological integration in complex healthcare environments: a systematic review of the literature (PubMed)

Summary: To support safety and efficient care, effective integration of technology in high-risk and time-constrained healthcare environments is critical. This systematic literature review aimed to highlight the impact of technology on the physical environment, as well as the facilitators and obstacles to integrating technology in complex healthcare settings, including operating theaters and trauma rooms. PsycINFO, Web of Science, and PubMed databases were used, along with a manual search. The PRISMA and MMAT guidelines were used for reporting and quality assessment. Out of 1,001 items, 20 were eligible. The categories identified included hybrid and integrated environments, technological environment and information technologies. Technology integration has implications for direct patient care, efficiency, productivity, patient safety, teamwork, communication and perception of care. Facilitators and barriers to technology integration included layout design, equipment placement, and decluttering. The physical environment can improve the impact of technology on factors such as patient safety and efficiency.
