October 23, 2023 – Gills Onions of Oxnard, California is voluntarily recalling Gills Onions fresh diced onion products because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy people infected with salmonella often develop fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, Salmonella infection can cause the organism to enter the bloodstream and cause more serious illnesses such as arterial infections (ie, infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis. Symptoms usually appear within 12 to 72 hours after consuming contaminated food and usually last four to seven days.

Users: The recalled products shipped to Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington are listed in the table below. These recalled products have an expiration date well past August 2023 and are no longer available for sale in stores. Please check the product description in the table below. We acknowledge that the recalled onions or foods with these onions as an ingredient may be in consumers’ freezers. Anyone in possession of expired product should not consume it and should destroy or discard it.

This recall is being made with the knowledge of the US Food and Drug Administration.

Food safety and public health are our priorities, so the company initiated the recall after the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notified it that the recalled products were part of the agency’s investigation into an ongoing outbreak of Salmonella Thompson. Out of an abundance of caution, the company’s recall and the table below include all products produced on the same day and on the same production lines as the affected onions.

Gills Onions has notified its customers who received the recalled product directly from the company and asked them to remove it from the market. We also asked direct customers to notify their customers of this recall.
