Although food trends come and go, some of them should come out a little faster. When redditor u/Prestigious-Humor872 asked the people of r/AskReddit to share which modern food trend they can’t wait to see go away, they didn’t hold back. Here are some of the current food trends that people are confused about or tired of:
1.
“The ‘fry everything’ trend. Don’t get me wrong, I love my fried chicken and poppers, but fried butter? That’s the line.’
2.
“Give food with melted cheese or cheese sauce. It’s completely unnecessary and the food would probably be better without it.”
—u/ZIntrovertCF
3.
“Restaurants serving food on cutting boards, shovels, paper, shells – anything that isn’t a real plate.”
4.
“The ASMR Food Videos. People filming themselves eating food and clapping loudly into the microphone – why?!”
—u/Zenosols
5.
“Sweets on top of sweets. Who really wants a milkshake with a donut, a lollipop, and a cupcake?”
6.
“Graphic design menus that try to be creative but end up just confusing. Also PDF and QR code only menus. I would really prefer a physical one.”
—u/malaakh_hamaweth
7.
“Food trucks that charge the same price as a premium restaurant but on a floppy plate with half the portion size that I have to stand up to eat.”
8.
“Calling a slight change in a recipe a ‘hack.’ Adding Parmesan to your grilled cheese sandwich isn’t a hack—it’s a small change to the recipe.”
—u/No_Pear_2326
9.
“The stupid trend where people waste an incredible amount of food just for clicks and views.”
10.
“It’s all called yuzu, but it’s actually just a lemon.”
—u/the_junglist
11.
“People put food in wine glasses for a reason.”
12.
“Fancy restaurants that serve ‘street tacos’ and charge around $18 for three.”
—u/Chipwich75
13.
“Food that has too many garnishes, purely for the shock value of it all. I don’t want a Flamin’ Hot Butthole Destroyer 3000 with three types of meat, three types of cheese and three types of sauce, I just want a good, simple burger with a tasty patty.”
14.
“‘Sausage boards’ that have Cheetos, Hershey’s, marshmallows, etc. These are not sausages! I’m not a sausage snob, but at least I need some cheese and crackers on this board.”
—u/azemilyann26
15.
“Deconstructed food. I didn’t pay you a lot of money just to cook or make my own food.”
16.
“Everything tastes like truffle. Real truffle can be wonderful, but in moderation. Nowadays people put truffle oil in everything and anything. Enough!”
—u/nippyhedren
17.
“Boards with butter. Enough said.’
18.
“It’s more of a trend in restaurants, but I’m sick of polished concrete floors, exposed brick and pipes and having to order at the counter. Can we bring back the nicer dining rooms, please?’
—u/mrkeith562
19.
“Burgers that use brioche buns. They are falling apart and too sweet – STOP. Save the brioche for French toast.”
—u/grambleflamble
20.
“Desserts that are huge and expensive. I don’t want to pay $18 for a cookie, brownie and melba cronut served on a cart wheel with cotton candy toppings. I want a cheap little sweet decadence to finish off a nice meal. “
21.
“Restaurants that only serve small plates meant for sharing. You go broke trying to gather enough food for a real meal, and even then you might still leave hungry.”
—u/Rumpelstiltskin2001
22.
“Each new flavor is spicy hot, flaming hot, deadly hot, etc. Some of us can’t stomach this spicy nonsense.’
23.
“Communal dining tables in restaurants. You’re not ‘building community’ or ‘fostering relationships’, you’re asking your customers to sit next to random strangers so you can get more people into your restaurant.’
—u/k_dubious
24.
“Bloody Marys that are topped with celery, olives, three onion rings, a chicken wing, two bacon cheeseburgers, and a premium 18-inch pizza. Stop the over-the-top side dish.”
25.
“I pay extra for ‘prettier’ food. There seems to be a lot of focus on visual presentation over taste these days. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate a good arrangement, but damn. I feel that trendy places focus too much on how their food is Instagrammable instead of making it delicious. And the thing is, I can’t even blame the new restaurants because social media is how you advertise now. So people, often enough, end up choosing restaurants based on eye-catching coasters and gimmicks rather than actual reviews of whether the food is good or not at a reasonable price.”
—u/Wand44 paperbacks
26.
“Colouring food black with activated carbon.”
27.
“Gilded food. It’s all about status.”
—u/bzaroworld
28.
“Burgers that are so tall and big they can’t be eaten without dislocating your jaw.”
29.
And finally: “Food related to science. The bubbling guacamole, the floating cylinder of whatever you have to stab so the sauce pours onto your plate, the steaming mystery dome to open. Just bring me real food, please.”
I actually love watching ASMR mukbangs so I hope they don’t go away…but I sure hate those food waste videos! What are some food trends that you absolutely love and what are some that you absolutely cannot stand? Let me know in the comments or you can submit via this anonymous form!
